Most of us have heard about autism, but do we really know what we need to know? According to the latest statistics from CDC, about 1 in 88 American children have Autism Spectrum Disorder (hereafter referred to as Autism), up from the previous number (1 in 110) released five years ago. Despite such high prevalence, the stories of countless children and their families have remain largely untold.

The Self-Closed Child: An Autism Documentary” sets out to tell the stories of families with young children who have been diagnosed with Autism. Our goal is to track about ten families for at least one full year, and follow along on their unpredictable journey – their struggles, confusions, decisions, hopes, and triumphs. In addition, we will also highlight the efforts made by parents, advocates and health care professionals to build a better future for children with Autism. Check out the rest of this site to learn more about our project.

We are in active fundraising phase!

Total project budget: $50,000

“Get us going” phase 1 target: $5,000

Proper funding is essential for the timely completion of this documentary. The “phase 1″ funding, specifically, will allow us to start filming with more families, pay a follow-up visit to Evie in Idaho, and expand our fundraising and grant application activities. Please consider making a donation toward our project! Aside from our eternal gratitude, we also have a series of special rewards for our supporters, including DVDs, credits, tax-deductible status, profit-sharing points, and some unique, exciting opportunities. Go to the “Support Us” page for all the details! In addition, please help us spread the word to anyone who may be interested in supporting us!

The term “self-closed child” is based on the Chinese word for Autism, “自闭症”, which literally means “self closed syndrome”.

  1. As you know I have a son with Severe Autism so it’s close to home for me but not only do I have a son but I believe a nepehw has it as well. My middle daughter her best friend has Autism and my oldest daughter her old boyfriend had Autism. My neighbor has a child in one of my nepehws class and he has Autism as well. The rate of Autism right now is so high that it’s almost impossible to not know anyone who is being effected by it. How close is it to your home?
